Ex-IT inspector gets 3-year jail for graft

By IANS,

New Delhi : A Delhi court has awarded three years’ jail to a 63-year-old retired income tax inspector after he was found guilty of graft, official sources said Wednesday.

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Special Judge Pradeep Chaddah awarded three years’ jail to S.K. Chopra and slapped him with a fine of Rs.30,000. Chopra was held guilty of the graft charge Sep 26 and was sentenced Oct 1.

Assistant commissioner of income tax K.K. Chugh (now dead), Chopra and another inspector, Purshottam Jolly, entered into a criminal conspiracy and threatened Ramesh Chopra, a businessman, to implicate him in a case and demanded Rs.25 lakh as bribe in 2006.

The court acquitted Jolly, giving him the benefit of doubt.

The court, however, held S.K. Chopra guilty of corruption and criminal conspiracy.

“They planned to extort money from a jeweller and also succeeded in obtaining first instalment of the bribe amount (Rs.50,000),” the court said in the order.
