Eight lakh families to benefit from health insurance scheme

New Delhi : A total of eight lakh families will come under the health insurance cover as Delhi government has decided to extend Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna to domestic workers, railway porters, street hawkers and vendors in the capital.

This was decided in a meeting chaired by Labour Minister A.K. Walia Thursday.

Rasthriya Swasthya Bima Yojna, the flagship scheme of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, aims at providing medical relief to the poorest of the poor.

Currently, the scheme covers one lakh families which are Below Poverty Line – vulnerable and most vulnerable identified by Mission Convergence.

Construction workers registered with Delhi Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board are eligible for this scheme.

“The revised scheme is expected to benefit eight lakh families in Delhi comprising about 40 lakh members,” said a Delhi government official.

The registration for the scheme is likely to begin in November, said the minister.

While domestic workers can approach their respective Resident Welfare Association or the SDM office, the vendors can contact official local bodies.

Railway porters can reach local railway authorities for the details.

By making a token payment of Rs.30, the beneficiary family, comprising five members, will be entitled to annual medical benefits of up to Rs.30,000 from empanelled hospitals.

The scheme also reimburses transport cost up to Rs.100 per admission.

The premium under this scheme is paid by the centre and Delhi government on behalf of the beneficiary.
