India, US to discuss East Asia, Myanmar

New Delhi : US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns will meet Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai Friday to discuss the East Asia situation and the flux in Afghanistan.

Burns, on a five-nation Asia tour, comes here after visiting Japan, South Korea, China and Myanmar. He will also call on External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna.

The two sides will review their bilateral relations, including the progress in implementing the India-US civil nuclear deal, energy security and cooperation in developmental projects.

“He will discuss regional priorities and review progress across the breadth of the strategic partnership, including measures to strengthen our bilateral economic engagement, and deepen our security and defence cooperation,” the US State Department said in Washington.

Issues relating to the 18-nation East Asia Summit, the democratic reforms in Myanmar and ways to stabilise Afghanistan are expected to figure in the discussions, said informed sources.
