Three Assam militants arrested in Tripura

Agartala : Three dreaded militants of the Assam-based United Democratic Liberation Army (UDLA) were arrested in Tripura and handed over to Assam Police Sunday, police here said.

“Acting on a tip-off, police arrested the three UDLA militants Saturday night from a Silchar (in southern Assam)-bound bus at Dharmanagar,” a Tripura Police spokesperson here said. Dharmanagar is about 200 km from here.

Police have recovered Rs.35,000 in cash and five mobile SIM cards for cell phones from them.

“During interrogation, the rebels revealed that they entered Tripura from Kolashib district of neighbouring Mizoram. The outlawed group is trying to come together to carry out violent activities before assembly polls in Tripura,” the spokesman said.

The assembly elections in Left-ruled Tripura are scheduled in February next year.

According to police, the UDLA rebels are active in Mamit districts of western Mizoram and southern Assam. Their bases are in Patharkhandi and Highlakandhi areas of southern Assam and they carry out murders, abductions and run extortion rackets in both states.

Tripura shares a 53-km border with Assam and 109-km border with Mizoram.
