Pakistani gunned down in Copenhagen

By IANS,

Copenhagen : A 48-year-old man of Pakistani ethnicity was Wednesday killed in a brutal street shooting in the Danish capital, Xinhua reported.

Police said the murder was committed in plain view on a street in downtown Copenhagen.

The victim was killed by a single shot to the head, at close range from a nine-mm weapon in the borough of Vesterbro, police said.

Witnesses told Danish news agency Ritzau they heard a single shot fired on the street sometime after midnight.

Others told Danish news website Ekstrabladet.dk that the victim was shot in the neck following a quarrel with two people.

Police said they were working on the theory that only one suspect was involved. They launched a search for a well-built, tall, “foreign man”, around 25 years old.

A kiosk located near the crime scene will be investigated as the victim was in some way connected to the shop, police said.

A cartridge and a bullet were recovered at the scene, but the weapon used in the crime was itself not recovered.

Danish news website Politiken.dk said the killing could point to internal turmoil that exists among kiosk owners of Pakistani origin in Copenhagen.

Copenhagen Police’s central investigation director Jan Hoeier Mogensen told Politiken.dk that it could also be a private dispute.

In 1996, a 26-year-old Pakistani kiosk-owner was murdered following quarrels within the kiosk network, while a 24-year-old Pakistani was killed in 2011 for similar reasons.
