Dharamsala : The 15th Tibetan parliament-in-exile Thursday amended the official title of the democratically-elected head of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) based here.
A CTA spokesperson told IANS that the title ‘kalon tripa’ or prime minister has been changed to ‘sikyong’ or political leader.
This means 43-year-old Lobsang Sangay, who took over the reins of the government-in-exile from 74-year-old monk-scholar Samdhong Rinpoche in August last year, will now be known as Tibetan political leader and not the prime minister.
The spokesperson said the title, kalon tripa, in Article 19 of the Charter of the Tibetans in exile and relevant articles was amended unanimously after deliberations.
Following the devolution of his political authority to the Tibetan leadership, the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader, said Aug 8 last year that he was handing over the political leadership that he inherited from Tagdra Rinpoche to Lobsang Sangay, the first democratically-elected Sikyong or political leader.
The Dalai Lama has lived in India since fleeing his homeland Tibet in 1959 with over a lakh of his followers.
