New Delhi : A Delhi court has ruled that robbery would not be tolerated while awarding 10 years jail to three men convicted for robbing a nurse in 2008.
Additional Sessions Judge S.S. Rathi, in an order made available Saturday, awarded 10 years imprisonment to Mohammad Imran, Praveen and Mujib, and fined them Rs.50,000 each.
The court directed the trio to pay Rs.1 lakh to the victim Anita and her family as a token of compensation for the trauma through which she and her family underwent at their hands.
“In the light of above discussion and the fact that recent spurt of such like crimes in the city calls for the imposition of exemplary punishment so as to send the right message to all and sundry that cowardly acts of robbing innocent citizens by using deadly weapons would not be tolerated at all,” the court said Sep 27.
The court was hearing a robbery case that took place in the evening Sep 10, 2007, at Parsad Nagar in New Delhi. According to the prosecution, the convicts robbed Anita Soni, a nurse, when her husband was not at home.
The trio wielded a gun and a knife to intimidate her and looted Soni of three gold rings, a diamond ring, a gold chain, a mangalsutra and other precious articles.
Police arrested the accused following Soni’s complaint.
They were charged with robbery and other offences on Sep 10, 2008. The prosecution had relied upon 12 witness to prove its case.
