Panchsheel Nagar (Hapur): An undertrial facing charges in a Rs.10-lakh bank robbery was Tuesday shot dead and a lawyer injured when four assailants opened fire in a court complex in Uttar Pradesh as part of a gang war, police said.
Ashok Bhati, 26, facing trial for bank robbery, was attacked by four assailants when he was entering the judicial magistrate’s court in Hapur’s Kotwali area, police said.
Lawyer Ataur-Rahman, who was passing by, got hit by a bullet and was critically injured, police said.
“We have identified the criminals who attacked the accused. It was gang war,” said Senior Superintendent of Police Ashok Raghav.
Raghav told IANS that three people on a motorcycle fired at Bhati when police were taking him to court.
Bhati was killed on the spot while his accomplice Kapil escaped unhurt, said Raghav.
They were brought to court in the morning from Dasna jail in Ghaziabad, around 50 km from here, police said.
