Andhra seeks Rs.1,904 crore drought relief

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh government has sought financial assistance of Rs.1,904 crore towards drought relief, officials said Monday.

Senior government officials made a detailed presentation before a central team, which visited drought-hit districts during last two days.

Commissioner, disaster management, T. Radha told reporters after a meeting with the central team here that 234 mandals (blocks) in nine districts were affected by the drought during kharif crop season last year.

He said agriculture and horticulture crops over 13 lakh hectares were damaged due to the drought.

The team led by agricultural joint secretary of the central government Sanjeev Gupta visited Mahabubnagar, Kurnool, Annatapur and Kadapa districts to assess the drought conditions. The team members inspected the fields and interacted with the farmers.

Gupta said the team would submit a detailed report to the central government.
