UP revokes terror case against Tariq Qasmi

Lucknow: State government has revoked the case against Tariq Qasmi accused in the serial blast at Gorakhpur which occurred on 22 May 2007. Government informed that the decision has been taken by a high level committee after consultation with the law department. Qasmi is
presently lodged in Lucknow jail.

Uttar Pradesh’s Home Secretary, Sarvesh Chandra Mishra confirmed this decision of the government on Wednesday. He informed that the decision has been taken after getting reports from DM and SSP of Gorakhpur and in consultation with law department. Now the concerned district and court will be intimated about the decision through an official letter.

Mishra also admitted that Nimesh Commission had raised fingers over the arresting of Qasmi from Barabanki by STF. Qasmi is charged with explosive act, 7 Cirminal Law amendment aact and attempt to murder. Six persons were injured in the Gorakhpur blast.

This is the first incident when Samajwadi Party government has taken back the terror cases against any accused. Family members of Tariq had appealed to the government for revoking the case. Samajwadi Party had promised in its election manifesto to revoke fake terror cases. Tariq is also accused for conspiracy in the serial blast at Faizabad, Varanasi and Lucknow on 23 November 2007.

Barabanki Arresting under cloud:
STF claimed that it arrested Tariq and Khalid on 22 December 2007 from Barabanki railway station and recovered heavy amount of explosives. But questions were raised on this arresting. Family members of Tariq claimed that he was arrested by STF on 12 December by STF people from Azamgarh. His missing report was also registered on 14 December at police station Rani Ka Sarai. Family members also dispatched letters to DGP, Principal Secretary (Home), Human Rights Commissioner etc. Another accused Khalid was arrested by STF on 16 December. However, his uncle Mohd Zaheer Alam Falahi claimed that he was arrested from Madiyahu on same date and not from Barabanki.
