Informed SC about changes made in status report, says CBI

By IANS,

New Delhi : The Supreme Court has been informed about the changes made in the status report on coal scam and the names of those behind the changes, the CBI said Tuesday.

Talking to news channel NDTV, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chief Ranjit Sinha said the agency, which is probing the allocation of coal blocks, Tuesday submitted an affidavit in a sealed cover with information on the changes made in the status report.

“We have made a clean breast of everything in the affidavit that we have filed. Apart from that, we have also submitted a detailed report in a sealed cover today… what changes have been brought about (and) under whose instructions,” he said.

Welcoming the court observation, Sinha said it was up to the Supreme Court and the government to decide the level of autonomy that should be given to the CBI.

“It is now for them to take the call as to what type of autonomy is to be given to the agency or under what circumstances the agency has to interact with the political masters,” he said.

Asked whether he regretted meeting Law Minister Ashwani Kumar with the report, Sinha said: “I don’t think there is anything to regret… we will explain (to the court) the situation and circumstances in which we went to the office of the law minister.”

Admitting that he had no intentions to take on political heavyweights, Sinha said the investigations were on the “right track” and that the agency would continue to investigate the matter in a fair manner.
