Bangalore: Manipal University’s Melaka-Manipal Medical College, the first Indo-Malaysian joint venture in higher education, has secured six-star rating for the second time in a Malaysian quality evaluation system, the varsity said.
Located at Malacca in Malaysia, the college also bagged six stars for international students’ readiness in the 2012-13 MyQuest Ratings.
MyQuest, the quality evaluation system for private colleges ratings was instituted in 2010 by the Malaysian ministry for higher education to measure performance of private institutions in the South Asian country biennially.
“MyQuest rates private colleges from one (poor) to six (excellent). In the first edition held during 2010-11, our overseas medical college was given a six-star rating in the health and welfare cluster,” the private university said in a statement from Manipal, about 400 km from Bangalore.
Conceived under the ‘Look East Policy’ of then prime minister P.V. Narasimha Rao in 1993, the medical college was set up at Jalan Pengkalan Batu in Malacca in July 2001 though the first batch of students studied at the university’s campus at Manipal near Mangalore.
The 14-year-old medical college has produced about 2,500 doctors in medicine and dentistry since 1997 and many of them work in Australia, Britain, Singapore and the US.
