Guwahati: Kerala based Indian union Muslim League (IUML) formed the state unit in Assam. Shahanshah Jehangir, IUML National Secretary In charge of Assam, presided a meeting of the Assam IUML State committee formation in the state capital on 26 December.
About 200 political activists from various districts attended the meeting. Kasiruddin Sheikh and Mufti Abdul Matin Osmani were unanimously elected as the first state president and general secretary.
S Jehangir dubbed it as “historic moment,” when IUML is formally reviving its presence in north-east. He stressed that the Kerala Muslim model in politics and education must be emulated in Assam
IUML had played key role in the establishment of the Darul Huda Islamic University in Assam.
IUML also to soon form state level units in Manipur and Meghalaya as well.
New state President Kasiruddin Sheikh is hopeful that IUML will play active and positive role in the politics of Assam and will work to safeguard the interests of the Muslims in the state.
