Islamabad : At least six people were killed Friday when mortar shells fired from Afghanistan hit Pakistan’s northwest border region of South Waziristan, Xinhua reported.
Local Urdu TV channels quoted official sources as saying that around 30 mortar shells were fired from the Afghan side of the border.
The shells landed in Angoor Ada area of South Waziristan.
The identities of the victims were not known, and it was also not clear who fired the shells, the report said.
In December, two incidents of shelling from Afghanistan killed at least one Pakistani and wounded five others in North Waziristan.
In the past, incidents of cross-border shelling have escalated tension between the two countries.
In November, Pakistan lodged a protest with Afghanistan over cross-border shelling as the foreign ministry and the military said Afghan National Army troops fired mortars into Pakistani territory.
