New Delhi: In the first ever such initiative, the ministry of information and broadcasting Friday held a live Twitter conference on community radio which saw more than 200 questions being received on different aspects of the programme.

The theme of the conference was “Community Radio: Road Travelled and Way Forward”, and was chaired by I and B Secretary Uday Kumar Varma, who responded to the questions. Senior officials of the ministry were also present on the occasion, said a statement Friday.

The Live Conference was scheduled for half an hour but it went on for over an hour with more than 200 questions received.

Varma responded to nearly 45 such questions, which related to spectrum fee waiver, licensing, sustainability of the community radio model and career prospects.

He said the ministry would continue to do such exercises on other issues in the near future.

The conference provided the ministry the medium to understand the perception of the people in the social media space.

As the intervention was innovative, it also provided a platform to make the citizens aware of the key policies and programmes of the government.

The initiative also ensured that the awareness regarding the key policy interventions such as Community Radio reached the people in a form and language understood by them, said the statement.
