PM’s wife praises families of police personnel

By IANS,

New Delhi : Gursharan Kaur, wife of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Saturday praised families of Delhi Police personnel for supporting them while they perform duty at odd hours.

“The support of the families is the reason officers are able to do well. I praise their efforts to give constant support despite odd duty hours,” she said after inaugurating a family welfare centre in Malviya Nagar in south Delhi on the 66th Raising Day of the police force.

With 16 stalls selling handmade items — from pickles to handicrafts made by wives of Delhi policemen — the initiative will help supplement the income of the families.

“This initiative will surely give the wives of policemen confidence and recognition their endeavour will make them self-dependent and capable of earning an income for themselves,” Gursharan Kaur said.

The Malviya Nagar centre is the second in Delhi after the centre in Vikaspuri in west Delhi.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Provisioning and Logistic) R.K. Jha, policemen’s wives can also learn to make spices, pickles, toys, children’s wear, handicrafts and paintings.

The items might also find a place at the annual trade fair in Pragati Maidan and in Delhi Haat, Jha said.
