New Delhi : A 33-year-old man was arrested here for cheating and robbing people on the pretext of helping them deposit their money in banks, police said Sunday.
Deepak, a resident of Haryana’s Panipat, was arrested Saturday from Nabi Karim area of old Delhi when he was trying to escape with an old woman’s money.
“On the pretext of helping her, Deepak managed to take Rs.6,000 from an old woman, identified as K. Balamani, when she was waiting with her husband in a queue to deposit the money in State Bank of India (SBI) in Nabi Karim area,” said D.C. Srivastava, additional commissioner of police.
“As soon as the woman got suspicious over his activity and demanded her money back, Deepak tried to flee. But he was chased by people and caught. The money was recovered from his possession,” said the officer.
Deepak was immediately arrested by policemen who were deputed in the area.
Around six-seven years ago Deepak had cheated an old man in Ambala, Haryana, of Rs.19,000, using the same modus operandi for the first time, the officer said.
“Deepak was arrested in that case also, but after returning from the jail he adopted this method to earn quick money,” said the officer.
Since then, he has cheated people in Delhi, chiefly old people, the officer added.
