BSP humbles SP in Meerut election

Meerut: Mohd Younus won the election for the Chairmanship of Siwal Khas town area committee in Meerut district on Monday. The election may appear small but it assumes significance as Younus is from Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and defeated the Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate in the election. Though the elections were not held on party symbol still it
has sent alarm bells ringing in SP camp.

Meerut assumes significance as heavyweight Azam Khan is the incharge minister of the district. Besides this the district also has another state minister Shahid Manzoor but SP failed to attract the voters.

The election were necessitated in Siwal Khas as due to the death of one candidate Iqbal during the elections resulted in a sh0ck wave and all the candidates withdrew their nominations. It was seen as a solidarity move and Siwal Khas came into news. Iqbal was also former chairman of Siwal Khas. At state level people talked about unity among the candidates in the small town area.

This time the elections were held and Mohd Younus filed his nominations. Firdaus the widow of late Iqbal also filed her nominations. The sitting chairman Meraj also filed his nominations. It was believed to be a tripartite election but in the end it narrowed between Younus and Firdaus who was expecting sympathy wave due to the death of her husband.

During the polling, 81.6 percent voters exercised their franchise. Younus got 5040 votes while Firdaus got 4043 thus winning the election by 997 votes. Former MLA and BSP leader Jagat Singh congratulated Younus and stated that SP should learn a lesson from this election.
