Over one lakh workers join strike in Gurgaon

By IANS,

Gurgaon : More than one lakh workers joined the all-India industrial strike in the sprawling industrial belt here Thursday, with all four Maruti Suzuki plants closing down.

Suzuki’s plants — Maruti Udyog Ltd, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd at Manesar, Suzuki Powertrain India Ltd at Manesar and Suzuki Motorcycles India at Kherki Daula — were shut.

Ancillary companies also suspend production.

“Because of Wednesday’s violence at Noida, small and medium-scale industries in the belt declared a one-day holiday Thursday,” Jaspal Rana of Hind Mazdoor Sabha told IANS.

AITUC’s Anil Kumar said: “The strike was peaceful in both the organised and unorganised sectors.”

The strikers also demanded the reinstatement of nearly 2,500 workers at Maruti’s Manesar plant who were sacked after the July 2012 violence at the plant.

Haryana Roadways did not ply even a single bus. Delhi Transport Corp buses were not allowed into Gurgaon beyond IFFCO Chowk.
