New Delhi : A third of India’s rural population is poor, parliament was informed Wednesday.
Minister of State for Planning Rajeev Shukla told the Lok Sabha that the number below the poverty line (BPL) in 2009-10 was 33.80 percent in rural areas and 20.85 percent in urban areas.
At the national level, this figure stood at 28.81 percent, he said in a written statement.
