Chinese policeman suspended for concealing son’s crime

By IANS,

Beijing: A deputy police chief of a Chinese province has been suspended for covering up his son’s drunk driving, officials said Sunday.

Li Yali, deputy police chief of Shanxi province and police chief of the provincial capital of Taiyuan, will be on probation for one year, the China Daily reported.

Li was suspended from his police posts after a whistleblower claimed Li used his position to cover up his son’s drunk driving.

A video showing Li’s son Li Zhengyuan beating up a police officer was posted onto Chinese social media websites in October 2012.

The tape showed Li Zhengyuan assaulting an officer after being stopped for a traffic violation. Officers at the scene made him take a blood alcohol test, the results of which indicated that he was driving while drunk.

However, instead of taking him into custody, some officers walked him home.

An investigation found that Li had abused his power, and also committed other wrongs related to organisation and personal matters.
