Bengal now leads in violence on women, festivals: CPI-M

By IANS,

Kolkata : Ridiculing the “Bengal Leads” business summit being organised by West Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee government, the CPI-M Monday said Bengal was now only leading in violence against women, festivals, and market borrowings.

“We do feel that Bengal now leads in certain matters – in atrocities on women, the largest number of government sponsored festivals, and the way everything is now done from the party’s (Trinamool) standpoint,” leader of opposition Surjya Kanta Mishra told media persons here.

“Violence against women at public places has been a daily routine. Only a few days back a student of the Raja Bazar Science college campus of Calcutta University jumped off a running bus into the street after she was molested. Such things had never occurred earlier in Kolkata. The city is now surpassing Delhi in such crimes,” he said.

The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader said the state government has also gone for huge market borrowings. “In fact, Bengal now also leads in market borrowings by the government. The money for plan expenditure is being spent on non-plan expenditure. And the opposition has no right to have any presence at the government-run festivals.”

The second edition of the business conclave is being organised by the Banerjee regime at the industrial and port town of Haldia in East Midnapore district Jan 15-17 to rope in investment.
