Agartala : Ahead of the Feb 14 assembly polls in Tripura, state Congress president’s elder brother Sandip Roy Barman was arrested Monday night with arms, ammunition, Bangladeshi currency and incriminating documents of militants, police said.
Opposition Congress, however, termed the incident as “conspiracy” of the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).
The CPI-M said the incident again proved that the Congress was planning to unleash violence before the elections. The party also demanded a probe into the incident.
“Acting on a tip off, Assam Rifles troopers raided a brick kiln at Champaknagar, near here, and recovered a pistol, 8 rounds of bullets, some Bangladeshi currency, incriminating documents and materials of extremists,” a police spokesman told reporters.
The Assam Rifles troopers along with police also arrested three people, including Barman, who is the son of former chief minister Samir Ranjan Barman and elder brother of Tripura Congress chief Sudip Roy Barman.
Sandip Roy owns the brick kiln.
The Assam Rifles handed over the arrested people to police, who will present them before a court Tuesday.
The Congress, which has termed the incident as conspiracy, started a blockade of the Assam-Agartala national highway, the life line of Tripura, demanding the release of the arrested people.
