Facebook comment aftermath: Curfew, assault and protests in Kasargod

    Kasargod: day after protesters gathered in front of Kumbla police station in Kasargod, demanding the immediate arrest of individuals, behind the alleged insulting comments against the Prophet Muhammad (SAWS), violent acts of reciprocation were seen in several parts of the coastal district.

    On Monday, two youths were dragged out of a bus and assaulted, while they were on their way to attend tutorial classes near Yekkur in Mangalore.

    The youths have been identified as Moosa Mirshad (19) and Ramshid (19) and are said be in second pre-university college. They were forcefully stopped by a group of 10 persons and then assaulted with rods and wickets.

    The incident is suspected to be a retaliatory attack over the protests staged by a particular community.

    Incidents of stone pelting were reported at Muhimmat Community Hall at Shantipalla near Kumbla. Prayer centres in Kannatipura, Uppala and Badriya Jumma Masjid, Uppala were also damaged in stone-pelting by miscreants.

    Three shops in Kasargod and several buses have been damaged in the ensuing violence.

    Considering the volatile atmosphere prevalent at several places, District Collector P S Mohammed Sageer has imposed section 144 in Kasargod Taluk and other areas falling within Hosdurg and Bekkal police station limits for a week.

    The police have arrested one Arun Kumar (27) for allegedly posting the derogatory comment on Facebook and have warned of more arrests against anyone who defies the curfew orders.
