Kolkata : The family of Barasat gang-rape victim Friday expressed its desire to meet President Pranab Mukherjee to seek exemplary punishment for the perpetrators of the crime, a Congress leader said.
“The family has expressed its desire to meet the President (Pranab Mukherjee) and I have assured them that I will make all the arrangements for them,” said Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who visited the victim’s residence at Kamduni village of North 24 Parganas district.
The 20-year-old college student was abducted, gang-raped and murdered June 7 in Barasat, 25 km from Kolkata, while she was returning from college.
Taking a suo moto cognisance of the case, the West Bengal Human Rights Commission asked the inspector-general of police (South Bengal) to probe the case and submit a report within three weeks.
Chowdhury said that he was “ashamed” because Bengal, which once was the birth place of the widow remarriage movement, now ranked at the top in crimes against women.
The minister urged the people of the state to participate in the mass protests to protect women.
