Doha : The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, Tuesday announced the transfer of power to his 33-year-old son, Sheikh Tamim.
The 61-year-old emir said in a televised speech broadcast on Qatar state television that the decision has been made following weeks of consideration, Xinhua reported.
Qatar has given no official explanation on the transition, but it is widely believed that Sheikh Hamad is suffering from health problems as such a move is rare in the region.
The outgoing monarch ascended the throne 18 years ago and has led his small but energy-rich country with success.
British-educated Sheikh Tamim has held top security and economic posts, as well as serving as the National Olympic Committee chairman.
He has two wives and six children. Muslim tradition allows men to marry up to four wives.
