Kolkata : To stop harassment of people seeking various services, the West Bengal government Wednesday said it would enact a law making it mandatory for providing such services within a fixed time, failing which the errant employee would be fined.
The proposed legislation, christened Paschim Banga Lok Parisheba Adhikar Bill (West Bengal Public Services Rights Bill), was approved by the state cabinet which met during the day, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee told mediapersons here.
“A lot of people who go to government officials to seek basic services face harassment. This bill makes it mandatory that such services are provided within a stipulated period. In case of default, if the victim lodges a complaint, the errant employee will be fined Rs.250 to Rs.1,000,” Banerjee said.
The bill also safeguards government employees from being harassed.
“The safeguard is to ensure that nobody can misuse the legislation to harass government staff. Complaints from people of not receiving government services in time will go to a commission, which will go through the complaints and see whether they have basis,” she said.
