India, Kuwait hold talks on boosting economic ties

New Delhi : India and Kuwait Monday discussed opportunities for Kuwaiti investment in refineries in India and also matters relating to the welfare of the large Indian diaspora in Kuwait.

The talks were held between External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid and visiting Kuwaiti Minister of Amiri Dewan Affairs’ Sheikh Nasser Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah here.

“During the discussions, opportunities for Kuwaiti investment in refineries in India and potential Indian project exports to Kuwait were discussed,” official sources said.

“The two ministers also exchanged views on the situation in West Asia and matters relating to the welfare of the large Indian community resident in Kuwait,” the sources added.

Sheikh Nasser, who is on a three-day visit to India, arrived Sunday. He is accompanied by officials of the Kuwaiti Investment Authority and Kuwait Petroleum as well as Kuwait Chambers of Commerce.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Sheikh Nasser was to forward a letter from Kuwait’s ruler, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to President Pranab Mukherjee.

The visit is on the invitation of the Indian government, conveyed through Khurshid, the agency said.

Sheikh Nasser is also to meet senior officials to discuss means to further cooperation and coordination between the two friendly nations.

The Kuwaiti delegation includes Kuwait Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s deputy chairman Khalid Al-Saqer, Kuwait Petroleum’s managing director Farooq Al-Zanki, Amiri Diwan Undersecretary Mazin Al-Eisa, and Kuwait Investment Authority chief Mohammad Al-Hilal Al-Mutairi.
