By TCN News,

Koodankulam (Tamil Nadu): People’s Movement against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) staged a ‘siege protest’ against the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP).

A public statement by the MANE said, “The officials of the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP), the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) have consistently refused to share any public documents on the KKNPP and to reveal any truths about the various leaks, repairs and the technical problems in the project. The Indian government and the Tamil Nadu government are also keeping quiet about the drastic situation in the KKNPP leading to various rumors and fears about the safety of the project.”

The PMANE hence staged the siege protests in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu on March, 11 2013, Monday to express their “vehement opposition the recalcitrant attitude and approach of the state government, the central government and the DAE,” to abandon the uranium-loaded KKNPP that is “steeped in grave danger with leaks, repairs and technical problems,” and “to convert the KKNPP into a National Model Energy Park with solar and tidal power stations, and windmills.”

The PMANE also staged a hunger strike at Thoothukudi, sea siege against KKNPP at Idinthakarai in Tirunelveli district and agitations at Colachel and Nagercoil.
