Andhra assembly adjourned again

By IANS,

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh assembly once again adjourned without doing any business Saturday as the opposition stalled proceedings over the Babli project and Telangana issue.

Speaker N. Manohar adjourned the house till Monday after two earlier adjournments failed to bring the house in order.

The house, which re-assembled a few hours after the Telangana Rashtra Samithi’s no-confidence motion against the Congress government was defeated at 1 a.m., witnessed uproarious scenes with the main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and TRS stalling the proceedings.

While the TDP wanted a debate on the Babli project being built by Maharashtra across Godavari river, the TRS insisted on the house passing a resolution for carving out a Telangana state.

After the speaker rejected the adjournment motions, their legislators rushed to the podium.

The TDP wanted an immediate debate on the Babli, saying it would hit the state’s interests. Finance Minister Anam Ramnarayan Reddy’s pledge to soon call an-all party meeting on the issue failed to pacify TDP.

The TRS again stalled the house demanding a resolution on the Telangana issue. The government has rejected the demand saying the issue falls under the purview of the central government.

The speaker first adjourned the house for one hour and again for half hour. When the house re-assembled, there was no change in the situation, forcing the speaker to adjourn the house till Monday.

The budget session began Wednesday with the governor’s address. The house was adjourned Thursday without doing any business.

The no-confidence motion taken up Friday saw a 15-hour acrimonious debate before it was voted out.
