Road named after UAE president being built in Pakistan

Islamabad: A road named after UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan is being built in Pakistan’s northwest tribal region.

Around 85 percent of work has been completed on the UAE-funded Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Road in South Waziristan, said Abdullah Khalifa Al Ghafli, director of the UAE Project to Assist Pakistan (PAP).

The estimated cost for building the road is $38 million.

The 50-km road features five bridges and its height ranges between 4,600 and 8,600 feet.

The PAP is currently carrying out 28 development projects worth $54.5 million in South Waziristan alone, he said.

These include two colleges for males and females, a $5-million model school for 1,200 students.

The PAP is building a 50-bed Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Hospitaland is also rebuilding three 50-bed hospitals. The projects will serve 35,000 people.

A total of 20 projects worth $2.1 million are under construction to provide pure drinking water to 6,500 households.

The PAP has also given out 5,000 food parcels to poor families and 3,000 school bags to students in South Waziristan.
