Andhra is leading e-commerce destination in India, says eBay study

Hyderabad : Andhra Pradesh has emerged as the leading e-commerce destination in India, accounting for the highest number of ecommerce hubs but the southern state is at seventh place in terms of transactions, revealed a study by eBay India, the leading ecommerce company.

The state has 565 ecommerce hubs out of a total of 4,306 in 28 states and seven union territories. Tamil Nadu is at second place with 443 hubs and Maharashtra third with 341 hubs.

According to eBay India Census 2012 released here Wednesday, the ecommerce hubs in the country have gone up by 30 percent over the previous year. Consumers from over 3,281 Bharat hubs and 1,015 rural hubs shopped online.

Vidmay Naini, head, retention marketing and global EasyBuy, eBay India, said the consumers from India export to 201 countries and import from 141 countries.

India’s top five ecommerce hubs are Delhi, closely followed by Mumbai, Jaipur, Bangalore and Chennai. Hyderabad is the sixth largest ecommerce hub. Guntur in Andhra Pradesh tops the list of rural hubs in the country.

The report revealed that the US, Britain, Australia, China and Canada are top trading partners of India in ecommerce.

Among the categories electronics continue to dominate with 48 percent of domestic transactions with lifestyle (41 percent) category also witnessing growth with the increase in number of women consumers.

Samsung is the most transacted brand on eBay India, followed by Apple, Sony and Nokia.

The ecommerce market is growing at 80 percent but eBay claims to have a higher growth rate. Vidmay, however, declined to share the specific numbers.

The size of global ecommerce market was $763 billion in 2008 and it is projected to hit $1.3 trillion this year. The size of the Indian market was $800 million and it is projected to reach $5 billion in 2015.

Globally, products worth $2,457 are sold every second on eBay. In India, eight million consumers sell 12 products every minute.
