Chennai: Al Qamar Academy and Spark Science Club will host Dr. Sultan Ismail talking on the topic “Making of a Scientist” at the IInd Annual Science Lecture. The lecture is scheduled for Sunday 10th November 2013 from 10:30 am-12:00 pm at Al Qamar Academy.
Dr. Ismail, the man behind “Simple Tasks Great Concepts” has constantly advocated the use of simple everyday material to teach science to children. His hands on approach demystifies science and makes children enthusiasts. Unfortunately his approach is rare. Most children learn science only at school and that too through memorization of facts from a text book. This approach fails to create enthusiasm or interest in children which of course dooms efforts to produce great scientists. Parents or teachers who notice children who show interest in science are at a loss as to how to encourage this interest. The talk “Making of a Scientist” will provide valuable input for any parent, teacher, or those interested in popularizing science among children. This will be an interactive session with an introductory talk by Dr. Ismail and then the floor will be opened to questions from the audience.
Dr. Sultan Ismail is a highly respected and multifaceted person – biologist, ecologist, teacher, educationist, scientist, and food activist. He is famous for his technology vermitech which is used to recycle organic garbage into valuable fertilizer using local varieties of earthworms and is also applied in soil bioremediation. He has conducted projects for different governments both in India and abroad to popularize vermicomposting. He loves to work with children and has delivered several lectures including more than 200 schools across the country and abroad creating awareness on environment, solid waste management and vermicomposting. Dr. Ismail has also given lectures to teachers in several schools about improving teaching techniques. He recently retired as Head of Department of Biotechnology at New College. He continues to spend his time tirelessly advocating the cause of education and science through lectures and workshops world over.
