Guwahati: Expert on gender studies and former member of Lok Sabha Malini Bhattacharya expressed serious concern over insecurity of women in Indian as she delivered a lecture on the topic ‘Can Law Help Women to Survive?’ in Guwahati on Sunday.
“This situation, as we can see, is insecure and hazardous for women as for all others who are unequal. The state can offer them no protection any longer and their social identities based on community, caste and ethnicity turn more and more restrictive even as they become trapped in this identity,” Bhattacharya who was also a former professor of Jadavpur University told a gathering speaking on the occasion of 9th Brajanath Sarma Annual Lecture.

The Dhaka born scholar who has written several gender related books further said that law in itself cannot restore equality when the social-political forces are moving in a different direction. “In fact law takes its rise from the social rubric and reflects its tendencies. If in our country, we find that it is well-nigh impossible for the poor and the powerless to find justice, that even when convictions come they come too late for the aggrieved to benefit from it, that such people avoid the police and the law-court unless they are absolute desperate. It shows that law has very little autonomy,” she added.
With number of crimes against women are increasing everyday in India and with the recent historical judgement of a fact tract court on the four accused of the Delhi rape case this has become the most talked after issue in the recent time.
