A tale of two brothers

By Mohammed Abdul Jawad,

It’s not a story penned down in imagery, but a true one—a desperate son, not much literate, working in Saudi Arabia as an expatriate is eager to call his old mother on a visit visa. But then, there’s an obstacle! His profession is marked as ‘house-driver’ on his residence permit, and with this status he cannot apply for a visit visa for his mother.

Though he felt helpless, but he wasn’t hopeless. Ah, then, he thought of his elder brother, who too works in Saudi Arabia, on a high post in a reputed company. With his elder’s brother’s high ranking profession on the residence permit, there wouldn’t be any hassles in getting a visit visa. After all, why a brother should feel shy of asking help from his own brother? With these thoughts, one day, the younger brother asked his elder brother to apply for visit visa for their mother. But, he ignored the very idea of calling their mother on visit visa.

Of course, the elder brother, holding a managerial position, can immediately apply online for a visa, and can even sponsor his old mother’s stay here. After all, he earns a handsome salary, moves around in a luxury SUV, his family and kids shuttle in and out from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on vacations. With a span of almost 25 years, he has made a lot of savings, earned wealth, made properties, and now his ageing mind hovers around for social activities that can bring him a little pomp, fame and reputation. What a typical personality who disrespects his own mother, and still thinks of rendering social services in outer friendly circles!

What a morose feeling this ungrateful son has given to his old mother! The lady, who raised him, saw him as he grew up, now has to bear the scorn of her married son. Yet, in this cruel world, very often, we find mothers who silently bear the harsh mannerism of their children, and in addition, their hearts beat in love for them. O, how great the show of mothers’ compassion, love and caring!

The younger brother made it clear. If their mother gets the visa, he will bear the ticket fare, her stay expenses, or whatsoever…This poor fellow, repeatedly requested his elder brother, but nothing eventually happened. At last, the elder brother retorted back, and his words were: “Why to call her here, in this age, let her be at home!”

What a rude trait of this grown up married son! When he openly shows slack attitude, refuses to apply visit visa for his mother, and has so much disregard in his heart, then what can be said. Enough is enough! And this ungrateful son happily (recently) received his wife and children back from his home country and after a little family togetherness, he is busy charting out schedules for spiritual journeys to Makkah and Madinah.
