New Delhi : A court here Thursday sentenced Sher Singh Rana to life imprisonment for killing bandit-turned-politician Phoolan Devi in 2001. Following is the timeline of the murder case:
July 25, 2001: Phoolan Devi, then Samajwadi Party parliamentarian from Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh, is shot dead outside her residence at Ashoka Road in New Delhi.
July 27, 2001: The prime accused Sher Singh Rana is arrested from Dehradun.
July 28 and 29, 2001: Phoolan Devi’s personal security officer, who sustained serious bullet injuries, records his statement before police.
Oct 23, 2001: Delhi Police files chargesheet against Sher Singh Rana and 11 others.
Sep 18, 2002: Court frames charges against the accused.
Feb 17, 2004: Rana runs away from Tihar Jail in New Delhi.
June 2, 2006: Rana is arrested in Kolkata.
Nov 13, 2013: One of the accused dies in Tihar jail.
July 16 2014: Court reserves judgment order.
Aug 8, 2014: Court convicts Rana; 10 accused are acquitted.
Aug 12, 2014: Court reserves its order on sentence against Rana.
Aug 14, 2014: Court sentences Sher Singh Rana to life imprisonment.
