Kabul :Two soldiers of the NATO-led coalition forces were killed Wednesday when two people in Afghan military uniform opened fire in eastern Afghanistan, an International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) statement said.
“Two ISAF service members died when two individuals wearing Afghan National Security Forces’ uniforms shot them in eastern Afghanistan today (Wednesday),” Xinhua quoted the coalition forces as saying in the statement.
The brief statement also said that the “ISAF and Afghan officials are assessing the incident to determine the facts and as more information becomes available, it will be released as appropriate”.
It did not reveal the nationalities of the victims under the ISAF policy.
If it confirm that the attackers were members of ANSF it would be the first incident of the so-called “green on blue” insider attack when members of Afghan security forces turned their weapons against their foreign partners this year.
Several coalition service members died in green on blue attacks over the past couple of years in the militancy-hit country. The Taliban insurgent group had in the past claimed responsibility for the majority of the such incidents.
The deaths will bring to 11 the number of foreign soldiers who lost their lives in Afghanistan in 2014. More than 57,000-strong NATO-led troops, down from the peak of 130,000 in 2010, are currently being deployed in the country.
