Annual award in memory of lone AGP Muslim Minister Shahidul Alam

Guwahati: Shahidul Alam Choudhury, who had a very humble background, came to limelight in 1985 when he was sworn in as a cabinet minister in the AGP government of Assam. He was the lone minister from the Barak Valley in the cabinet. He shone over the political sky of Barak valley for nearly three decades until his death in November 2012.

In order to perpetuate his memory and to keep his service to the community embedded in public mind, Minority Welfare Society (MWS) Guwahati has announced institution of the Annual Sahidul Alom Choudhury Memorial Award, the first award to be presented in April 2014.

It may be mentioned here that late Sahidul Alam Choudhury was elected as MLA five times from Algapur Constituency of Hailakandi District and served twice as Cabinet Minister in the Government of Assam.

The award is meant for a person of Muslim community of Barak Valley origin for outstanding achievement in his/her field of activity such as education, literature, social service, science and technology, arts, sports, deen (Islam), medicine, health care, professional career, journalism, entrepreneurship, etc.

MWS has invited nominations for the award which may be submitted by individuals or organisations. The nomination should contain the name of the person proposed for the honour; his/her brief bio-data and contact details. The proposer should also give his/her/their brief introduction along with contact details.

The award consists of a trophy, scroll of honour and a cash component of Rs 25,000. A jury of eminent personalities constituted for this purpose would decide the recipient of the award. MWS plans to hand over the award during its annual general meeting to be held in Guwahati during April 2014.
