New Delhi : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jagdish Mukhi will be filing his nomination for the Delhi assembly speaker’s post Thursday, a party official said.
“He will be filing the nomination today (Thursday),” a BJP official said.
The move comes after Mukhi, the MLA from Janakpuri constituency, declined to be the pro-tem speaker.
The pro-tem speaker administers the oath to all newly-elected legislators and presides over the assembly until a new speaker is elected.
“A pro-tem speaker’s role is limited, and he is appointed by the honourable Lt. Governor, the senior most person in the house, irrespective of the political parties. Accordingly, I was appointed, and I am thankful to him,” said Mukhi.
“But our party had decided that no MLA from BJP shall accept this responsibility, as the party thought of contesting the speaker’s election,” he said.
The elections for the post of the speaker and deputy speaker will be held Friday.
