Meghalaya celebrates 42nd statehood day

    Shillong : Celebrating its 42nd statehood day, Meghalaya Health and Family Welfare Minister Alexander Hek Tuesday emphasised that “non-violence was the hallmark of its struggle”, which has been imbibed in the spirit of the people of the state.

    “Non-violence was the hallmark of our struggle for statehood which was attained in an atmosphere of peace and co-operation. It is this spirit we should imbibe in our pursuit for furthering the vision of our forebears,” Hek said at a function.

    He also urged the people of the state to nurture an environment of peace which is crucial for the overall growth of the state and to make Meghalaya a model state.

    Stating that the 42 years of statehood have witnessed many indelible moments, crucial to the genesis of Meghalaya, Deputy Chief Minister Roytre Christopher Laloo promised to ensure Meghalaya is destined for progress, prosperity and self-sufficiency.

    “Meghalaya’s development over the years has been unique and commendable in many ways. The state had recorded many achievements, be it in the fields of industry, agriculture, health, tourism, education or infrastructure,” Laloo said.

    Meghalaya was formed as an autonomous state April 2, 1970 and as a full-fledged state Jan 21, 1972, after being carved out of Assam.
