Bhubaneswar : Odisha Governor S.C. Jamir and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik unfurled the national flag as the Republic Day was celebrated across the state Sunday.
The governor hoisted the flag at Bhubaneswar and the chief minister at Cuttack.
After taking salute at an impressive parade, Patnaik said in a speech that democracy had been strengthened after India’s independence.
“People have faith in democracy. They have become more aware of their rights. The accountability of the administration has increased. The faith of people in secular values has grown,” he said.
Patnaik called upon the people to protect democratic and secular values.
Although Maoists put up posters and banners at a few places in the southern districts asking people to boycott the celebrations, there was no untoward incident anywhere, police said.
The celebrations were peaceful in areas where Maoist are active such as Malkangiri, Koraput and Rayagada.
