AMU clarifies its stand on appointment of guest faculties

By TCN News,

Aligarh: The Aligarh Muslim University has clarified that appointment against the guest faculty positions in only three faculties have been put on a hold while in the rest of nine faculties appointments are being made as a usual exercise.

Last week it was reported that AMU has frozen the recruitment of guest faculties that would affect at least 250 teachers, currently employed in the University on temporary basis. Some teachers are teaching as guest faculty for over a decade.

The University has denied that about three hundred guest faculties will be affected by this decision. There are only 86 sanctioned positions of guest faculties in the three faculties including 34 in Arts, 27 in Science and 25 in Social Science faculties. The University clarified that in Science Faculty, most of the vacant teaching positions are being filled through General Selection Committee and there is no justification for appointing guest faculties.

Further, AMU contended that in view of a large number of PDF, SRF, JRF and other research scholars in these faculties, who are given scholarships by the University Grants Commission, it is not justified to hire guest faculties for teaching. The services of research scholars may be taken to teach undergraduate classes.

AMU administration says that research scholars who are getting scholarships under the Maulana Azad National Fellowship have to be engaged in teaching as an essential condition as the concerned heads of departments have to verify their teaching assignments.

The University has also cited that in Jamia Millia Islamia, guest teachers are paid Rupees one thousand per period subject to maximum of Rs. 25,000/- per month. It clarified that Jamia Millia Islamia has approved the engagement of JRFs, SRFs, PDFs etc for teaching of theory/practical classes up to the maximum of 10 periods per week.
