Aligarh: Sir Syed Minority Foundation of India, a group comprising of current and former students of the Aligarh Muslim University has written to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterating the demand to restore the minority status of the University.
The letter addressed to the PM has been signed by the President of the SSMFI, Md Perwez Siddiqui. He urges the PM for “support and kind consideration” on the issue. He writes, “If you believe that India cannot be developed until and unless the development of its minorities, then this is the right time for you to act on this wisdom.”
Reminding the PM of “long history of minority character” of the AMU, he writes that the University “holds its unique characters that speak for its claim to be a minority institution.”
In 1968, the Supreme Court in its judgment had quashed the minority status of the university saying AMU has been established by an Act of Parliament. Since then the minority status of the University has turned into a political issue.
On behalf of the SSMFI, Perwez urges the PM to use his influence to ask HRD ministry to promptly submit the long due Affidavit which has been sought by the honorable supreme court. He also urged the PM to pass the bill in the Parliament and move the motion in the favour of AMU minority character.
“Our goal and demand are parallel to your theory of inclusive growth and it is possible only with the growth of minorities of our country. We strongly have faith that your ministry will take the most essential and positive steps to restore the minority character of AMU,” Perwez urged the PM.
