Kolkata: Kickstarting her party’s campaign for the coming Lok sabha polls, Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee Saturday led women leaders and candidates of her party in a rally to mark International Women’s Day.
Holding aloft the symbolic saffron, white and green flags with the floral logo, female members as well women from all sections of society, numbering in hundreds, walked the around three km distance from College Square in north Kolkata to Dharamtalla in the city centre.
The rally, organised by the Trinamool Mahila Congress, was attended by most of the women leaders of the party.
The rallyists also carried posters highlighting the development work undertaken by the Trinamool government in the state.
Prior to the march, Banerjee took to her official Facebook page to wish women.
“I congratulate all my mothers, sisters, and girl children who are the future of our country. Girls are our assets,” she posted.
Taking the lead, Banerjee strode through one of the busiest traffic junctions in the city, as policemen ensured a safe passage for her and her supporters.
The party is fielding 11 women candidates in the 42 seats in Bengal.
