Assam govt to hand over cases related to alleged terror activities to NIA

By TwoCircles.net Staff Writer,

Guwahati: Assam government on Saturday decided to hand over cases related to alleged terror activities in the state to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

A law and order review meeting convened by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at his office chamber decided to hand over the cases to the NIA so that the cases could be probed thoroughly as it has international ramification.

Gogoi directed the officials to take all possible steps against anti-national activities. “We have to take all possible measures to foil the sinister designs of anti-national elements. We will not compromise on national security and national integrity,” he said.

Assam has been in news recently for alleged terror links of one of its political outfits and arrest of six youth from the states, one of which, police claimed, had training in Bangladesh.

The meeting also decided to introduce the commissionerate system of policing in Guwahati. The capital city would come under a Police Commissionerate with effect from January 1, 2015. Rapid urbanization, leading to burgeoning growth in the city’s population had created for police greater challenges than ever before, the meeting said.

The officials and the chief minister also reviewed the state’s overall law and order situation. The meeting was attended, among others, by Principal Secretary, Home & Political Department, MGVK Bhanu, DGP Khagen Sarma, ADGP, law and order, RM Singh and ADGP, SB, Pallab Bhattacharya.

Meanwhile, an eight member team of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) met President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Hamid Ansari and Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami on Friday at New Delhi seeking a proper investigation into the matter of the allegation of AIUDF’s involvement with Islamic fundamentalists.

AIUDF chief and the Dhubri MP Badruddin Ajmal said the President, Vice President and the Home Secretary assured them of proper investigation and justice.
