Schools shut in Syria for implementing Islamic curriculum

Damascus : The Islamic State (IS) militants have closed most of the schools in Syria’s Deir al-Zor province in order to apply their own “Islamic curriculum”, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said Friday.

The IS will assess the teachers’ knowledge in the field of Sharia or Islamic Law, during the schools’ closure.

Sources said the IS held a meeting Wednesday in one of the mosques in al-Mayadin town with the school principals to inform them of the decision.

The radical organisation is to provide an Islamic law course for the teachers in al-Mayadin in order to prepare them for applying the new curriculum, SOHR said.

A group of students, teachers, and parents protested near Deir al-Zor against the closing of the schools.

The jihadis control almost the entire province of Deir al-Zor.
