Guwahati : The ruling Congress in Assam on Monday issued a show-cause notice to party legislator Rumi Nath over her alleged link with the kingpin of an auto theft racket in Mumbai and Delhi who was arrested in the state.
Anil Chauhan, a kingpin in the auto theft racket and wanted by police in Mumbai, Delhi and Meghalaya, was arrested by police in Guwahati last week.
The alleged link between Nath, a two-time legislator from Borkhola constituency in Karimganj district, and Chauhan came to light after the police probe revealed that Chauhan was issued car passes by the Assam legislative assembly authorities on her recommendation.
A Congress leader on Monday said Nath has been asked to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against her for the alleged link.
“Nath has to reply to the notice by Friday (April 10),” the leader said.
The passes were issued for the same vehicle between 2013 and 2015.
In 2013, the Congress legislator was shown as the vehicle’s owner, but it changed to Chauhan in the subsequent years.
On Saturday, assembly Speaker Pranab Gogoi sent a letter to Nath asking her to explain her position on the allegations by Wednesday.
Nath had first won the election from Borkhola in 2006 on a BJP ticket. She, however, defected and won in 2011 on a Congress ticket.
