Kolkata : West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress on Thursday furnished documents in response to a CBI notice seeking its account details. The agency is probing the multi-crore-rupee Saradha Ponzi scheme scam.
The development comes a day after Trinamool supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lashed out at the Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the Centre for using the CBI and other central agencies to intimidate the opposition.
“On the directions and behalf of the party, we came here and handed over documents,” Trinamool legislator Tapas Roy said outside the office of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) here.
“We have submitted whatever documents it (CBI) has asked for,” he said.
In its notice addressed to Trinamool general secretary Subrata Bakshi, the probe agency earlier in the week sought within seven days the details about the party’s income and expenditure since 2010.
Addressing a public rally on Wednesday, Banerjee charged the Modi government of using the CBI as a political tool.
Speaking on the same lines, her nephew and Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee too hit out at the central agency.
“Such notices come whenever there are polls. The CBI, Enforcement Directorate and other such agencies work as puppets for the BJP. Even the Supreme Court called the CBI a caged parrot,” Abhishek Banerjee said on Thursday while campaigning for the party in the civic polls.
