SIO starts 15 days campaign demanding University in Murshidabad

Kolkata/Berhampur: West Bengal State unit of Students Islamic Organisation has started a 15 days long campaign Shikhsar Adhikare Socchar Hoi’ (Raise voice for the right to education) from April 20 demanding better educational infrastructure and a new state university in the district.

The campaign began from Berhampur town, district head quarter of Murshidabad. The district unit of the SIO organised a seminar and public meeting on April 19 at the Murshidabad Journalist Association Hall, Berhampur to mark the beginning of the programme.

Organisers criticised the state government for their negligence in the district that comprises of 70% Muslim population. They reminded that in 2010, local residents had donated 20 bighas of land to set up a degree college, but the state government has not taken any initiative till date.

Senior journalist of the Telegraph Alamgir Hossain reminded that the situation of government run primary schools are worse as children cannot even read or write properly. He said that there is a need to make village based committees to monitor the education system in the government schools.

SIO state secretary Sk Muhabbat said that Murshidabad does not have a single University but neighbouring Nadia and Burdwan district have three and two universities each. He said that this is not just at the level of the University but even at school level we see this disparity. He said that with a population of 71 Lakhs, Burdwan has 466 Higher secondary schools and 787 Secondary schools; whereas Murshidabad has only 328 Higher secondary schools and 511 secondary schools. Although population here are same.

National Awardee teacher Muhammad Selim, Central committee Member of SIO Masiur Rahman, Shamsul Halsana and many others distinguished personalities were present in this seminar.

State President of SIO Mofiqul Islam highlighted the deprivation of the Murshidabad district by the state government.
