New Delhi: The Hurriyat Conference should not be given a “larger than life profile” as it does not represent the people of Jammu and Kashmir and India, the Congress said on Saturday.
The statement came as Pakistan’s envoy to India, Abdul Basit, invited Kashmir’s separatist leaders to attend a reception for Pakistani National Security Adviser Sartaj Aziz on Sunday ahead of a meet between Aziz and his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval. India has advised against this.
At a press conference, Congress leader Anand Sharma said: “We should not give a larger than life profile to Hurriyat, it has no locus standi, it does not represent people of Jammu and Kashmir and India.”
Sharma said the Congress was “saddened and embarrassed” by the recent developments on the NSA talks.
“The situation that has evolved for last few days has raised fundamental questions. We would at outset like to make it clear that we are concerned and we are saddened and embarrassed by these developments,” he said.
“This is a matter of India’s national security, India’s pride, and India’s principle position of the issue of terrorism. India has to speak only in one voice when it comes to the issue of terrorism…,” Sharma said.
He also said till date people don’t know the agreement reached between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart at Ufa, Russia.
“We wanted the details of the Ufa Agreement. Till date the country doesn’t know on what India agreed,” he said.
